Nominations for the TCA Awards 2017 have been announced, with FX’s bold comedy Atlanta, Hulu’s dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale, and NBC’s heart-warming This Is Us all getting showered with love.
The TCA Awards, voted on by the Television Critics Association, have doled out nominations for its 33rd annual ceremony. What makes the TCA Awards special is that they do not separate genders for the acting categories and were the first major awards group to do so, even if the MTV Movie & TV Awards claimed otherwise earlier this year. The awards also offer a fresh approach to what was truly the best in TV from the past year, as opposed to more mainstream/middle-brow taste of the Primetime Emmys.
This year’s TCA Award nominees also show that the quality of television in this modern age has only increased since last year, especially for women. Of the 12 nominations for Individual Achievement in Drama and Individual Achievement in Comedy, there are nine (9!) women nominated, and only three men. On top of that, the men nominated are all people of color, which proves that female and minority voices are truly thriving on television in 2017.

Nomination leaders include Atlanta, The Handmaid’s Tale, and This Is Us with four each, followed by Big Little Lies, The Crown, Feud: Bette and Joan, The Good Place, and Stranger Things with three. Notable shows thought to be Emmy favorites that were completely snubbed from the TCA Awards include Westworld, Silicon Valley, and House of Cards.
So what does this mean for the Emmys? Typically, not much. Unlike the Oscars and the precursor film awards leading up to it, there tends to be a disconnect between what the Emmys love and what other organizations love, even major ones like the Golden Globes. But with so many of the TCA Award nominations mirroring what many are predicting for the Emmys, it’s possible there could be more overlap than ever before.
Emmy campaigning is getting more intense than ever, and any show can use the added buzz of these TCA nominations with just one week of voting left. There are no other precursors at this time, with the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards all held in January, so the TCA Awards can provide an extra boost to newer shows like Atlanta, The Crown, Stranger Things and This Is Us.
The Heritage and Career Achievement Award nominees were not announced. Winners are expected to be revealed at the TCA Awards.
The TCA Awards will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Beverly Hills Hilton in California, hosted by Kristin Chenoweth. They will not be televised.
