The Annie Awards, rewarding the best in animation in film and television, announced their 2017 nominations Monday morning, with Disney-Pixar’s Coco leading at 13 noms. The Disney-Pixar original is followed closely by GKIDS’ The Breadwinner at 10, cementing its status as the one film that has a chance of beating Coco at the Oscars. The Breadwinner is fresh off winning the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Feature.
Also of note is the lack of The LEGO Batman Movie in Best Animated Feature, especially with the presence of perceived weaker films The Boss Baby and Despicable Me 3. Could we be heading towards yet another LEGO snub at the Oscars? Speaking of The Boss Baby, the often-mocked film did pretty well in nominations here, so it shouldn’t be counted out moving forward.
On the TV side, I love that Wendie Malick was nominated for her brutally devastating voice performance in BoJack Horseman, as BoJack’s domineering mother, Beatrice.
