The Producers Guild of America held their annual award show Saturday night in Los Angeles, doling out trophies to the best producers in film and television. The Shape of Water was awarded the big prize for film, defeating 10 other contenders, including The Big Sick, Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, Get Out, I, Tonya, Lady Bird, Molly’s Game, The Post, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Wonder Woman.
PGA is considered an important precursor to the Academy Awards because it shares the same preferential ballot system as Best Picture at the Oscars. The winner at PGA and Oscars matched up for eight consecutive years from 2007-14, but the past two years have diverted. In 2015 the PGA Award went to The Big Short while the Oscar went to Spotlight and last year the PGA went to La La Land and the Oscar famously went to Moonlight. It’s possible we could go return to the awards matching up, but it is important to remember that The Shape of Water‘s win here doesn’t mean its over for its main competition.
