The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their nominations for the Outstanding Producer of Documentary Motion Pictures category on Tuesday, listing seven films in total. The producers have not yet been vetted by the guild, but the films nominated are as follows:
- Advocate
- American Factory
- Apollo 11
- The Cave
- For Sama
- Honeyland
- One Child Nation
Films like American Factory, Apollo 11, For Sama, Honeyland and One Child Nation continue to perform well this award season, but as any awards prognosticator would tell you, there are no guarantees at the Oscars when it comes to Best Documentary Feature. Jane and Won’t You Be My Neighbor famously cleaned up among documentary precursors, only to be overlooked by AMPAS. It’s not clear yet if this trend will continue, but Apollo 11 is one to keep an eye on, considering the aforementioned snubs relied almost exclusively on archival footage. Apollo 11 is the same way, and if we see its exclusion on Oscar nomination morning, we’ll know for sure just how turned off the doc branch is by such films.
The Sports, Children’s and Short-Form Program nominees will be announced December 19, 2019. The remaining nominations for Theatrical Motion Pictures, Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures, Television Series/Specials, Limited Series Television and Televised/Streamed Motion Pictures will be announced on January 7, 2020. The winners will be honored at the PGA ceremony on January 18, 2020 at the Hollywood Palladium.
