The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has announced their film and TV nominations for 2017, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri emerged as the top contender with four nominations, including Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Ensemble.
Big Little Lies co-leads the TV nominations, much like it did at the Golden Globes, with four. Cast members Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård and Reese Witherspoon all have individual citations for their performances. On the more surprising side, there were also four nominations for Netflix’s new series GLOW, including individual nods for Alison Brie and Marc Maron, plus Ensemble and Stunt Ensemble. The other series to earn four nods is Stranger Things, including Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Ensemble and Stunt Ensemble.
On the film side, SAG has become the most crucial precursor for the Oscars in the acting categories, considering they share many of the same voters. They do not always match up completely, like last year when Denzel Washington won Best Actor for Fences at SAG but lost to Manchester by the Sea‘s Casey Affleck at the Oscars. Yet, there are way more instances of the two groups matching up, even more so than the Golden Globes or Critics’ Choice Awards.
The SAG Awards will air live Sunday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on TBS and TNT, with host Kristen Bell.
