An introduction. I’m Kevin Jacobsen, a freelance entertainment writer whose work you may have seen on Gold Derby, The Inquisitr and Enstars. This is my own personal site where I will discuss movies in the context of the years they were released, with a particular emphasis on Oscar-winning films. Ever wonder why The King’s Speech beat The Social Network, Crash beat Brokeback Mountain, Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan, Moonlight beat La La Land and so on? I’ll examine each Best Picture winner at the Oscars, with a look at how they won, why Oscar voters preferred it to other films, the socio-political climate at the time, the multi-million dollar campaigns, and whether the winning film stands the test of time or has cemented itself as a relic.
I’ll also cover the current Oscar race, including a look at the many film trophies handed out before the big night. Plus, some special pieces on films that were ignored by the Oscars, individual acting races, and the Academy Awards as an institution.
